computer not recognizing the camcorder

I have a new Canon FS100 camcorder and my MacOSX does not recognize the camera after I connect it. I cannot transfer my movies onto my computer. I'm getting an blinking icon on the camera that I think means the problem is in the connection. I have the power cord plugged into the outlet and into the camera and the USB cable into the computer and connected to the camera.
