Olympus OM20 Manual Camera: how to get correct light readings...

In the viewfinder, 3 things are lit up. "Manu" (Manual), +- (always lit) and either Shutter speed OR Aperture settings. My question is, since I can find NO GREEN LIGHT to tell me the light is right to take a photo, HOW CAN I TELL WHEN IT'S SAFE TO TAKE A PHOTO?
