Question About Optimus - Katadyn Products Inc. Digital Camera 16-3869

I selected format on the menu, and it deleted all my pictures on internal memory. Help! Is there anyway to get these pictures back? What is format? I thought I could "edit" pics in format, but I pushed it, and no it says "no images" when I go to internal memory.
