5 Hi, it sounds like you have a frustrating problem. First, if the data on the camera is precious to you, you want to try to connect it to a computer with a USB cable and extract the media. Re-formatting the hard drive will erase everything on the camera. Secondly, DO NOT try to re-format your drive with your computer. First, just take the camcorder and connect it to AC power through a convenient wall socket. Touch HOME, and then (Manage Media), then [Media Format], and then [HDD]. You will see a screen similar to the first one above this paragraph. Just touch [YES] and then [YES] again. When [COMPLETED] appears, touch OK. if you are wanting to format the "Memory Stick PRO Duo," there are slightly different directions to follow. If you've lost your manual, you can download another one at docs.sony.com. IF that doesn't work, also check out www.xdatarecovery.com and navigate to the Sony Hard Drive Camcorder Problems page. Your specific model isn't listed, but I'm sure it's included in the group. It has some more troubleshooting info as well as an email to write to. Lastly, I hate to suggest negative solutions, but often if you call a large company, ask for the HR department, not the techs. Tell them what you've been through and what you've read online about their products. If you ever so nicely suggest mentioning all these negative things about their company on social media sites, they often will just send you another one or even upgrade you. Please make this a last resort, though. Good luck!
