Cannot get the battery/memory card compartment open. Obtained new, but no user manual included.

5 I had the same problem and the instruction manual provides absolutely no help. Here's the solution: slide the gray release button toward the rear of the camera, then slide the entire battery compartment door away from the tripod mount--it will slide out about a quarter of an inch and then swing open.
