To attach to the tripod, position the collar tripod socket on the tripod screw and
tighten. To rotate the lens (with camera attached) for vertical or horizontal format,
loosen the collar locking screw, rotate the lens to the desired position, and retighten
the locking screw to secure the assembly. For precise positioning, clickstops are pro-
vided at 90° intervals.
FOCUSING B
The fully automatic diaphragm of this lens enables focusing with maximum image
brightness at all times. To focus, loosen the locking screw securing the focusing/zoom-
ing control ring and turn the ring until the image on the focusing screen appears sharp
and crisp; note that this lens remains at the same focus setting during zooming
operation.
To prefocus the lens using the engraved distance scale settings, rotate the focusing/
zooming control ring until the desired camera-to-subject distance setting (as measured
or estimated) is lined up opposite the distance scale index line engraved on the lens
barrel.
In high or low temperatures, the focal length of the lens might be slightly different
when compared with what it is in ordinary temperatures. In this case, you can rotate
the focusing ring of the lens slightly beyond the infinity position to focus accurately.

Various interchangeable focusing screens are available for F2 and F3 Nikon cameras to
suit any type of lens or picture-taking situation. Those which are recommended for use

©= Excellent focusing
8= Acceptable focusing
The split-image rangefinder, microprism or crosshair area is dim. Focus on the
surrounding matte area.
O =
Acceptable focusing
Slight vignetting (or moire phenomenon in the case of the microprism) effects the
screen image. The image on the film, however, shows no trace of this.
• = Exposure measurement not possible; lens/ screen combination permits only focus-
ing operation
Blank means not usable.
