Spindle Turning
Spindle turning is the operation performed when
a workpiece is mounted between the headstock
and the tailstock (see Figure 39
).

corner to corner to determine the center.
To set up a spindle turning operation:
1. Find the center point of both ends of your
workpiece by drawing diagonal lines from cor
-
ner to corner across the end of the workpiece
(see Figure 40).
Spindle Turning
Make sure the headstock and tailstock cen-
ters are properly aligned before beginning
any turning operation. See Aligning Centers
on Page 38 for additional instructions on
this procedure. Failure to observe this warn
-
ing could result in the workpiece being
thrown from the lathe resulting in serious
personal injury.
2. Using a wood mallet, tap the point of the spur
center into the center of the workpiece on
both ends, leaving an indented center mark.
3. Using a
1
⁄4" drill bit, drill a
1
⁄4" deep hole at the
center mark on the end of the workpiece to
be mounted on the headstock spur center.
