Using the Focus lock button
(For AF cameras compatible with AF-S Nikkor lenses only. See page 16.)
During autofocus, the focus can be locked if you set the Focus operation selection switch to AF-L
and press the Focus operation button (Fig. C).
•The AF-Lock function can be engaged on either the camera and lens. Focus is locked while either
of these buttons is pressed.
Using Focus preset (Figs. H, I, J)
(See page 16 for usable cameras. Available during autofocus and manual focus.)
Memory set
1 Set the sound monitor switch to to activate the sound monitor; set it to to cancel.
2 Focus on a subject that you want to memorize the focused distance.
3 Press the Memory Set button and a beep sounds, indicating that the focused distance was stored
in memory.
4 Then you can continue to take pictures, while the focused distance is retained in memory.
•Memory set is possible regardless of the position of the Focus mode switch or Focus operation
selection switch.
•The focused distance is kept stored in the memory even when the camera is turned off or the lens
is detached from the camera.
Memory recall
5 Set the Focus operation selection switch to MEMORY RECALL.
6 Press the Focus operation button and two beeps sound to indicate the focused distance was
recalled. Then depress the shutter release button all the way to take the picture.
Note 1: In the M/A mode, the lens reverts from Memory recall to autofocus only when you
remove your finger from the Focus operation button and lightly depress the shutter
release button. Therefore, if you fully depress the shutter release button immediately
after removing your finger from the Focus operation button, you may not be able to
take a picture at the set position.
To take pictures at the memorized focused distance, (1) press the Focus operation
button, or (2) continue to lightly depress the shutter release button to recall the
memory, then fully depress the shutter release button.
Note 2: When performing Memory recall at focal length setting different from when the Memory
was set, the focused distance may be off slightly. Be careful, particularly when
performing Memory recall at longer focal length setting. When the sound monitor
switch is set to , two short and three long beeps sound as a warning. It is
recommended to perform Memory recall as often as possible at the same focal length
when the memory has been set.
Note 3: If the distance scale ring turns from right to left about 10 times when setting, and at the
same time one short beep and three long beeps sound, perform Memory set again.
Using AF start (Operation varies depending on cameras in use. See page 16.)
First, set the Focus operation selection switch to AF-ON. Then, when the Focus operation button is
depressed, autofocus begins.
