Translucent Mirror Technology is an exclusive new-generation
Sony technology that enables high-speed, high-precision,
phase-detection AF to be used for both still-photo and
Full HD movie shooting, via either the finder or LCD monitor.

Best Imaging Innovation:
Sony SLT, Translucent
Mirror Technology
In conventional DSLRs when the shutter button is pressed, mirror is usually lowered and
distance is measured using light reflected off sub-mirror. Mirror rises just before shutter is
released to expose the image sensor to light. Due to the physical action of ‘Mirror Flipping’,
there is limitation to the speed of operation in the DSLR. Also as the Mirror rises, Auto Focus does
not work during exposure. Similarly, AF in unavailable during Video and Live - View shooting
as well. Some DSLRs shift to limited manual focus or Contrast Detection system during
this time.
On the other hand, in Sony SLTs, thanks to the newly incorporated Translucent Mirror
Technology, mirror operation is no longer required. When picture is clicked, the Translucent
Mirror does not flip and it lets light pass through to the sensor. Only shutter is released & brilliant
pictures are captured. This makes it many-fold faster than any conventional DSLRs in the
category. Also AF is always achieved at a high speed and is highly accurate because light is
always guided to the top AF sensor whether shooting stills, movies or in Live View. The camera
has been downsized by the elimination of mirror drive mechanisms and the improved freedom
with parts layout. Clear images can be seen both in the viewfinder and LCD because highly
detailed images captured by the main image sensor can be used as live view images.
