Basic Photography and Playback: A (Auto) Mode
Using the Flash
When ISO sensitivity is set to Auto, the flash has a range of 0.5-5.5 m (1 ft. 8 in.-
18 ft.) at the maximum wide-angle zoom position and a range of 0.9-3.7 m (2 ft.
11 in.-12 ft.) at the maximum telephoto zoom position. The following flash modes
are available.
Raising and Lowering the Built-in Flash
Auto flash (U auto, V auto with red-
eye reduction, and Y slow sync): When
the shutter-release button is pressed
halfway under dim lighting, the built-in
flash pops up automatically. The camera
determines whether or not the built-in
flash pops up according to subject
brightness and shooting settings.
W off: The built-in flash does not pop up when the shutter-release button is
pressed halfway. Pictures can be taken without using the flash.
X fill flash: The built-in flash pops up whenever the shutter-release button is
pressed halfway in shooting mode.
Gently press the built-in flash down to lower it. Lower
the built-in flash when the camera is not used for
shooting.
U Auto
Flash fires automatically when lighting is dim.
V Auto with red-eye reduction
Reduce “red-eye” in portraits (A 32).
W Off
Flash will not fire even when lighting is dim.
X Fill flash
Flash fires whenever a picture is taken. Use to “fill-in” (illuminate) shadows and
backlit subjects.
Y Slow sync
U (auto) is combined with slow shutter speed.
Suited to evening and night portraits that include background scenery.
Flash illuminates main subject; slow shutter speeds are used to capture
background at night or under dim lighting.
