The Shooting Menu (for A (Auto) Mode)

AF Area Mode
Use this option to determine how the camera selects the focus area for autofocus.

Option Description
aFace priority
(default setting)
When the camera detects a human
face, it focuses on that face. See “Using
Face Detection” (A 67) for more
information.
If more than one face is detected, the
camera focuses on the face closest to
the camera.
When taking pictures of subjects other
than people, or framing a subject with
which no face is detected, the AF area
mode setting switches to Auto, and the camera will automatically
select the focus area (up to nine areas) containing the subject closest
to the camera.
wAuto
The camera has nine focus areas, and
automatically selects the focus areas
containing the subject closest to the
camera.
Press the shutter-release button
halfway to activate the focus area.
When the shutter-release button is
pressed halfway, the focus areas that
are in focus (up to nine areas) selected
by the camera will be displayed in the
monitor.
xManual
Select one of 99 focus areas in the
monitor. This option is suited to
situations in which the intended
subject is relatively still and not
positioned in the center of the frame.
Rotate the multi selector, or press H,
I, J, or K to move the focus area to
where the subject is, and take a
picture.
To cancel focus area selection and
adjust flash, macro mode, self-timer,
and exposure compensation settings, press the k button. To return
to the focus area selection screen, press the k button again.
