The amount of light that enters the camera is
controlled by the shutter speed. The brighter
the conditions, the faster the shutter speed
will be – or can be. Another way to think of
it is the brighter the conditions, the shorter
the amount of time the shutter needs to be
open to expose the scene properly. Low light
scenes will require the shutter to be open for
longer to allow more light onto the sensor to
expose the image correctly. But the shutter
speed can also be used to freeze movement
too. Fast-moving action subjects need a fast
shutter speed, for example 1/500 second – but
you can only use these shutter speeds if your
scene is bright enough. Both the shutter and
aperture are aected by the ISO speed (see
pages 1617), the measure for how sensitive the
camera is to light.
