To suit your specific shooting requirement (p. 46)
To add special effects like those in films or on the TV

If you set to OFF, digital zoom is deactivated and up
to 20× is carried out.
If you set to 40×/450×, digital zoom is activated and
more than 20× to 40×/450× is performed digitally.
