Use this menu for shots to get the correct brightness
(exposure), such as shots with extremely high contrast
between the subject and the background.
CHECK
• Compensation range: –2 EV to +2 EV
(13 steps in 1/3 EV increments)
• Explanation of Terms “EV” (➝p.149)
MEMO
• The exposure compensation setting is retained when
the camera is turned off (S icon appears). Set the
exposure value to “±0 EV” unless compensation is
required.
• Any of the following disables exposure compensation:
- Using the flash in AUTO or b mode
- Shooting dark scenes in d mode

Guide to compensation
• Backlit portraits:
+2/3 EV to +1 2/3 EV
• Very bright scenes (such as
snowfields) and highly
reflective subjects: +1 EV
• Shots made up predominantly of sky: +1 EV
• Spotlit subjects, particularly against dark backgrounds:
–2/3 EV
• Scenes with low reflectivity, such as shots of pine trees
or dark foliage: –2/3 EV
