AF Assist
Your camera is equipped with an AF-assist Illumina-
tor. If lighting is poor, the built-in
AF-assist Illuminator will light when the shutter-re-
lease button is pressed halfway, allowing the cam-
era to focus even when the subject is poorly lit.
Select Auto (default setting) or Off and press .
AF-Assist Illuminator Provides the Following Range
• Zoom out: a range of approx. 0.4 - 2.4 m (1'3" - 7'9")
• Zoom in: a range of approx. 0.4 - 1.5 m (1'3" - 4'9")
AF-Assist Illuminator
When the AF-assist option is set to Auto, the AF-assist Illuminator will light in the fol-
lowing cases:
• AF area mode is set to Auto or Off in the shooting menu, or the focus area in the
center of the frame is selected when AF area mode is set to Manual.
• Shooting in (portrait assist) mode without using a framing guide ( 31).
• Shooting in (night portrait assist) mode without using a framing guide ( 35).
• Shooting in the close-up mode.
• Shooting in the scene mode such as PARTY/INDOOR, BEACH/SNOW, DASK/
DAWN, COPY, BACK LIGHT, or PANORAMA ASSIST.
Rotate the Mode Dial to to select AF assist
( 117), and then press .

Auto
(default setting)
If lighting is poor, the AF-assist illuminator lights when
the Shutter-release Button is pressed halfway, allow-
ing the camera to focus the subject ( 24).
Off
The AF-Assist Illuminator does not light.
The AF-assist Illuminator can be turned off for shoot-
ing in situations in which the AF-assist Illuminator is
too bright for human subjects or in which flash pho-
tography is prohibited. When the AF-assist Illumina-
tor is turned off, it will not light even when the
subject is poorly lit. Under these conditions, however,
the camera may not be able to focus accurately.
