Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode
Using the Flash
In dark locations or when the subject is backlit, you can shoot pictures with flash by
raising the built-in flash.
The flash has a range of about 0.5 to 8.0 m (1 ft. 8 in. to 26 ft.) for wide, and about 1.7 to
5.0 m (5 ft. 7 in. to 16 ft.) for tele (when ISO sensitivity is set to Auto).
Change the flash setting according to each situation.
U
Auto
Flash fires automatically when lighting is poor.
V
Auto with red-eye reduction
Reduces “red-eye” in portraits (A34).
W
Off
Flash will not fire even when lighting is poor.
X
Fill flash
Flash fires when a picture is taken. Use to “fill-in” (illuminate) shadows and backlit
subjects.
Y
Slow sync
Fill flash is combined with slow shutter speed.
Flash illuminates main subject; slow shutter speeds are used to capture background
at night or under dim light.
Z
Rear-curtain sync
Flash fires just before shutter closes, creating the effect of a stream of light behind
moving subjects.
