Shooting with the extra optical zoom
The camera’s optical zoom can normally
give you a telephoto zoom of 4 times, but
by choosing a resolution that has an EZ
suffix, for example 5.5M , the extra
optical zoom starts functioning and zoom
extends as follows. (The example uses
[j] aspect ratio.)
• Set the resolution. (P73)

Move the zoom lever toward T.
■ When the extra optical zoom isn’t
working
For example: Resolution is 8M
■ When the extra zoom is working
For example: Resolution is 5.5M
■ Resolution and maximum zoom
■ How the extra optical zoom works
• The extra optical zoom works by
extracting the centre of the picture and
expanding it for a higher telephoto effect.
So, for example, if you choose [5.5M
], 5.5 million pixels (out of the total
[8M], 8 million possible with the CCD) are
taken in your shot.
• The extra optical zoom allows you to
increase the zoom ratio without the
reduction in picture quality you get with
digital zoom.
• The [ ] icon appears when you zoom
while using a resolution that can use the
extra optical zoom.
• You can zoom in even further by using this
in combination with the digital zoom. In
the [REC] mode menu, set digital zoom to
ON. (P78)
• The extra optical zoom does not work in
the motion picture mode [i].
