Reference Section
AF Assist
Enable or disable the AF-assist illuminator that assists the autofocus when the
lighting is dim.
Digital Zoom
Enable or disable the digital zoom.
B Notes on Digital Zoom
When the digital zoom is used, the camera focuses at the center of the frame.
The digital zoom cannot be used when Portrait, Night portrait, Backlighting with HDR set to
On, Pet portrait, Underwater, or smart portrait mode is selected in scene mode.
This feature may not be used in combination with certain features. See “Features That Cannot Be
Used Simultaneously” (A63) for more information.

Option Description
Auto
(default setting)
AF-assist illuminator lights automatically if the lighting is dim. The
illuminator has a range of about 3.5 m (11 ft) at the maximum wide-
angle position and about 2.0 m (6 ft 6 in.) at the maximum telephoto
position.
For some focus areas and scene modes such as Museum (A43)
and Pet portrait (A46), AF-assist illuminator does not turn on
even if Auto is set.
Off
AF-assist illuminator does not light. The camera may be unable to
focus if lighting is dim.
Press the d button M z tab (A11) M Digital zoom
Option Description
On
(default setting)
If the zoom button g (i) is pressed when optical zoom is set at the
maximum telephoto zoom position, digital zoom (A29) will be
activated.
Off Digital zoom is not activated.
