Your DVD Handycam is compatible with 8cm DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW.
It does not support 12cm discs.
Recording format for DVD-RW
When you use a DVD-RW, you can choose the recording format from VIDEO mode or VR mode.

For still images, you can record them on the all types of discs.

Formatting deletes all recordings and returns the recording medium to its original empty state. (p.62) Even
when using a new disc, format it with your DVD Handycam (p.28).

Do not use a DVD+RW before finalizing in a computer as this may result in a malfunction.
Choosing a disc
