Image Quality and Size
Making Effective Use of Memory
Together, image quality and size determine how much space each pho to -
graph occupies on the memory card.
Image Quality
The D2H supports the following image quality options (listed in descending
order by image quality and fi le size):
Option Description
NEF + JPEG
Fine
Two images are recorded, one NEF (RAW) image and one fi ne-quality
JPEG image.
NEF + JPEG
Basic
Two images are recorded, one NEF (RAW) image and one basic-quality
JPEG image.
NEF + JPEG
Normal
Two images are recorded, one NEF (RAW) image and one normal-qual-
ity JPEG image.
NEF (Raw)
Raw 12-bit data from the LBCAST image sensor are saved directly to
the memory card in Nikon Electronic Image Format (NEF).
TIFF (RGB)
Images are saved in uncompressed TIFF-RGB at a color depth of eight
bits per channel (24-bit color).
JPEG
Normal
Images are saved in JPEG format at a compression ratio of roughly
1 : 8.
JPEG Fine
Images are saved in JPEG format at a compression ratio of roughly
1 : 4.
JPEG Basic
Images are saved in JPEG format at a compression ratio of roughly
1 : 16.
NEF (Raw) / NE F + JP EG
File compression for NEF images is controlled from the Raw compression menu (
44). The following options are available:
Comp. NEF (Raw): NEF images are compressed using a “loss less” algorithm that re-
duces fi le size by approximately fi fty to sixty per cent with out affecting image quality
( 46–47).
NEF (Raw): NEF images are not compressed.
NEF images can only be viewed in the software provided with the camera or in Nikon
Capture 4 ( 223). When photographs taken at NEF + JPEG Fine, NEF + JPEG Nor-
mal, or NEF + JPEG Basic are viewed on the camera, only the JPEG image will be
displayed. When photographs taken at these settings are deleted, both NEF and JPEG
images will be deleted.
